Below is a link to a Podcast that I created discussing the structure and in-effeciency of pre-season soccer games in college soccer. In college soccer all pre-season games count towards your overall record and hunt for playoffs. This can limit a coaches ability to manage or experiement with his team and roster as every result is meaningful. This is different than most other places around the world where pre-season games do not count, are not meaningful, and therefore coaches have the ability to treat those games very differently.
